The northern Eurasian chronology of much of the last 100 ka is dependent on luminescence dating, in particular on dating using sand-sized quartz grains. This paper outlines the principles of the technique, briefly discusses some of the difficulties specific to samples from this area, and considers precautions field scientists can make to minimize uncertainties. Limits on the dating range are considered, and comparisons with independent age control are used to examine the accuracy of the luminescence ages.
