Abstract. A methodical approach to the selection, analysis and determination of the age of samples of modern bottom sediments in the Barents and Kara Seas is presented. The methodology includes a description of sampling, sampling tools, primary field processing and recommendations for preparing the obtained material for chronological analysis. The paper describes the advantages and disadvantages of certain methods and approaches to the study of a number of sedimentation basins with their characteristic conditions. Keywords: bottom sediment cores, sedimentation, sedimentation rate, sampling, age, ice scours, ploughmarks
