Abstract. It is proposed to identify the oceanic genetic type of Quaternary deposits when compiling survey and medium-scale geological maps of deep oceanic zones. Oceanic sediments and processes are quite different from offshore sedimentary formations. Such specific formations as turbidites, contourites, grain flows, and abyssal nepheloid silts occur exclusively in the oceans and within continental margins.
